The MOAA Tampa Chapter was established in 1953 by its Founder, Brig Gen Jack R. Beam, USAF as the first President. The chapter served the local community of retired and former military officers and their spouses. In September 2002, the National Board of Directors of then, The Retired Officers Association or “TROA,” voted to change the organization’s name to the Military Officer’s Association of America “MOAA” to broaden the focus to include all currently serving military officers and their spouses and surviving spouses, in addition to the retired and former officer community. This change reflected the growing need of a veterans service organization focused on all US military officers. The name, and more importantly, the new focus took root and all local chapters proudly became MOAA chapters. The Tampa chapter is a Five-Star organization dedicated to supporting MOAA’s primary purpose: To maintain a strong national defense and to ensure our nation keeps its commitments to currently serving, retired, and former members of the uniformed services and their families and survivors.
